Applying for Student Finance

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

With student finance applications now open for English and Welsh students, it’s time to start thinking about starting your application. Applying for student finance may initially seem scary, but trust us – there’s nothing to worry about.

Along with plenty of support and advice available throughout your application, we've put together the following overview of everything you need to know.

Why Apply

Student finance is available to help make the cost of going to university more manageable. If you’re a new undergraduate student wanting to study a full-time course, you are eligible to apply for two separate loans: a Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan. A Tuition Fee Loan is available to cover the cost of your tuition fees, whilst a Maintenance Loan helps towards living costs.

Although the Tuition Fee Loan is the same amount for all eligible students, the amount you may receive for your Maintenance Loan is dependent on personal circumstance.

You may also be eligible to apply for additional funding, such as a specific bursary or scholarship from your university or college, Disabled Students’ Allowances, Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, or Adult Dependants’ Grant.

How to Apply

First of all, you don’t need a confirmed place at university before starting your student finance application. Just create your account online and apply using your preferred choice of course. You can then change the details once you’ve accepted an offer.

As part of this process, you will be asked for evidence to support your application. In most cases, this can be provided by just filling in the details asked on the application form. If any further evidence is required, Student Finance will contact you. If you need to change any of your details before starting your course, you can do this by using your online student finance account.

You need to re-apply for student finance for each year of study (you will be contacted when it’s time to re-apply), so make sure you keep your login details safe. The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at: gov.uk/student-finance

When to Apply

If you are an English or Welsh student, applications for 2017 entry are now open, so make sure you take a look at the relevant student finance website to find out your deadline for applying (please see below). We recommend that you apply as soon as possible to get everything in place for the start of term.
