Living away from home – perhaps for the first time – is an exciting and significant step in your life. Living independently offers both new freedoms and new responsibilities. It’s also a great way to immerse yourself into the student community and make the most of living in Shrewsbury.

University Centre Shrewsbury and The University of Chester are working in partnership with Shropshire Council to provide accommodation at Mardol House, a halls of residence situated in Shrewsbury town centre.

If you are offered a place at Mardol House, our partnership accommodation, the room is allocated by the University of Chester Residential Services but your contract will be with Shropshire Council.

Mardol House is a newly renovated halls of residence comprising of 84 secure en-suite residences over five floors. Offering a mix of self-catered flats and studio apartments, Mardol House also provides launderette facilities and CCTV monitored outdoor bike racks.

This safe and secure halls of residence is in prime location in Shrewsbury town centre. It’s just a short walk from the lecture halls and library at Guildhall, close to all major public transport services, plus it’s just a few steps away from Shrewsbury’s shops, restaurants and amenities.


All rooms are self-catered, include free WiFi access and benefit from a 24 hour concierge service.

Single rooms include:

  • En-suite
  • Fully fitted kitchens, shared with a small number of other residents
  • Shared dining area
  • Fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster
  • Fully fitted wardrobe, bedside cabinet, study desk and bookcase

Studio apartments include:

  • En-suite
  • Fridge with freezer compartment, microwave, kettle and toaster
  • Fully fitted wardrobe, bedside cabinet, study desk and bookcase

You can also choose between a single room with shared kitchen and lounge facilities at £110 per week or a single studio apartment with a bed and fitted kitchen at £135 per week.

All contracts are 41 weeks in length which means you don’t need to vacate your room during the holidays.

All applicants will be sent information of how to apply for accommodation during the application cycle.

Allocation Policy

We aim to accommodate all first year students who have applied for accommodation by the deadline date (TBC). In the event that accommodation is oversubscribed, we will take the following criteria into account:

  • Specific needs or circumstances, such as medical conditions or care leavers. If you are a care leaver, you will need to contact Student Support during the accommodation application stage and provide information on your application form to be taken into consideration
  • University Centre Shrewsbury as your first choice of study
  • Geographical location of your home base. Places are allocated to those who live the furthest away from Shrewsbury

In the unlikely event that we are unable to offer you accommodation, we will do everything possible to assist you with securing alternative accommodation.

Mardol House is owned, managed and maintained by a great facilities team from Shropshire Council who also provide property management, premises maintenance, day-to-day operational management, health and safety advice, and cleaning and catering services in a wide range of other public buildings throughout Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Cheshire, North Wales and the West Midlands.
