Overview

Specialist tutors and excellent pastoral and academic support are a key feature of the course. You will be provided with essential underpinning knowledge and be introduced to the key themes relating to your chosen degree.

We will focus on a communicative approach to teaching and learning to ensure you can participate fully in classroom-based activities. Learning activities include use of real-world scenarios, seminars, lectures, debate, case study analysis, and group and individual projects.

Please note that for the Business, Law and Social Sciences Foundation Year options, as well as the Shrewsbury Life Sciences Foundation Year options, your Foundation Year will be taught at the University of Chester, and subsequent years of study (Levels 4, 5 and 6) will be based at University Centre Shrewsbury. Programme Structure:

The modules given below are the latest example of the curriculum available on this degree programme. Please note that programme structures and individual modules are subject to change from time to time for reasons which include curriculum enhancement, staff changes, student numbers, improvements in technology, changes to placements or regulatory or external body requirements.

The course is designed to introduce you to topics studied at University Centre Shrewsbury. Lecturers will provide you with a broad overview of their disciplines to ensure you have a comprehensive knowledge base to prepare you for your next level of study.

You will also learn how to use resources, and be introduced to the undergraduate degree you will be progressing on to. Complemented by attendance to events and taster lectures, the Foundation Year aims to develop your interest in the academic discipline you are preparing to study for.

Assessment

Assessment includes:

  •     oral presentations
  •     poster presentations
  •     written coursework
  •     laboratory reports
  •     case studies
  •     exams.

There is a combination of two or three of these on each module.
 

Careers

Upon successful completion of your Foundation Year, you will be able to progress on to your chosen undergraduate degree.

For the Business, Law and Social Sciences Foundation Year (below), your Foundation Year will be taught at the University of Chester, and subsequent years of study (Levels 4, 5 and 6) will be based at University Centre Shrewsbury.

For Shrewsbury Life Sciences Foundation Year (below), your Foundation Year will be taught at the University of Chester, and subsequent years of study (Levels 4, 5 and 6) will be based at University Centre Shrewsbury.

Extra Information:

Other vocational qualifications at Level 3 will also be considered, such as NVQs.

If you are a mature student (21 or over) and have been out of education for a while or do not have experience or qualifications at Level 3 (equivalent to A Levels), then our Foundation Year courses will help you to develop the skills and knowledge you will need to succeed in your chosen degree.

Please note: certain courses may require that you have studied a specific subject at GCE A Level (or acceptable alternatives), e.g. Biology, Maths or Chemistry, or GCSE Maths at grade C.

How to apply?

All applications must be made through UCAS. You will need to apply for your chosen subject with a Foundation Year using the codes listed on the UCAS website, e.g. Biochemistry (including a Foundation Year).
