About the Event

Professor John Coutouvidis continues his popular lecture series, “Reflections on the Century”
in 2020. The thread connecting this year’s programme of lectures and discussions is European
identity. Professor Coutouvidis will examine national communities and groups which defined
themselves by distinct histories while admitting to shared values, in a civilisation which fell
apart intellectually in the aftermath of the Great War, to be reconstituted in various political
forms throughout the course of a long revolution that threatened an entire continent, and a
Second World War which left it in ruin and rubble.

Recovery from war once again raised questions of identity within a continent engaged in a Cold
War and divided between East and West - the remnants of which are now playing out online, in
a conflict whose outcome has yet to be written.

Dr Coutouvidis begins this Wednesday with “The intellectual turmoil in Vienna which underscored 20th Century European culture”.
