About the Event

Join our Reading Group to discuss Shropshire native Mary Cholmondeley’s exciting and engrossing book, Red Pottage. Despite its humble title, Pottage created a scandal when it was published in 1899 as Cholmondeley demonstrated the need for women’s economic and emotional independence by attacking the pretensions of the English middle classes.

Our group benefits from the expertise of Naomi Walker, Visiting Lecturer at UCS. Naomi is currently writing her PhD thesis on two Shropshire authors named Mary: Cholmondeley and Webb. She is mapping their work within Shropshire and is also researching how place is depicted in their writing.
