Applying for student finance can seem like a daunting task, that’s why we’ve put together this simple step by step guide to make sure you have everything you need to know.

Need to Know

The application process for student finance varies depending on where you live. So for guidance on how to apply if you’re a student from England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland go to the following websites:

Top Tips

  • Apply early! It can take up to six weeks to process an application, so make sure you have everything in place before you start term.

  • Agree to share information from your application. This allows you to be considered for many bursaries and scholarships. At University Centre Shrewsbury, we have lots of additional support on offer so it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re eligible.

Getting Started

Step 1 – Set up a student finance account online. Use the links in the ‘Need to Know’ section to start setting up your account.

Step 2 – Include details of your household income and get your parents or partner to support your application if necessary.

Step 3 – Send in proof of identity.

Step 4 – Once your application has been looked at you will receive an entitlement letter by post. This will outline just how much you can expect to receive. Make sure you sign this and return it as soon as possible.

Step 5 – If anything changes like your course, place of study, income or family circumstances, you should update these on your online account before you start your course.

Step 6 – Open a student bank account. There are a number of banks in Shrewsbury town centre just a short walk from our Guildhall building, which makes banking and withdrawing money really easy.

Step 7 – Enrol on your course. Your Tuition Fee loan will be paid directly to the university and your Maintenance Loan will be paid into your bank account.

Step 8 – If you are eligible for any financial support packages from University Centre Shrewsbury, you will receive your payment in Term One.

Hopefully you now have enough information to get started on your application, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch, we would be more than happy to help!  Email our enquiries team - enquiries@ucshrewsbury.ac.uk
