The countdown is on to the Inaugural University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) Graduation Ceremony.

Today (Wednesday, June 20) marks 100 days until this momentous event which will celebrate the first students gaining their degrees and their time at the institution.

The ceremony will take place at St Chad’s Church, Shrewsbury, on the afternoon of Friday September 28, 2018, with further celebratory events taking place during the day. More details on these will be shared in the run-up to September 28.

Professor Anna Sutton, Provost of UCS said: “We’re excited that our Inaugural Graduation Ceremony will take place this year, marking the achievements of our first students. They have made history, and we are extremely proud of our pioneering cohort.

“The town has given them a wonderful welcome and place to study, and the students have become part of the community. They have represented us at civic events, joined local clubs and groups, spent time at local organisations on work placement, and supported local and national causes with fundraising activities.

“It is an honour to have the opportunity to offer degrees in this fantastic town and county, and see the students excel in their studies and interests during their time with us. Thank you to everyone who has helped to make this happen.

“We will be sad to see our first intake leave UCS but we know that some are staying in the area to work and study after graduation - and we’re eager to see what they accomplish next.

“We have much to celebrate on graduation day.”

Postgraduate students started courses at University Centre Shrewsbury in 2014 and undergraduate students were welcomed in 2015.

Undergraduates have chosen subjects from History, Geography and English to Psychology, Medical Genetics and Business, and postgraduates have studied courses in areas from Education to Health, reflecting both traditional Higher Education programmes and the county’s scientific history, environmental and social challenges.

A partnership between the University of Chester and Shropshire Council, UCS is a distinctive institution, focused on high-quality teaching and research, fostering entrepreneurship and contributing to the community, with the long term aspiration to become an independent University.
