The Students' Union plays a very important part in your university experience. Be it providing representation, offering advice or even organising social activities, you’ll soon get to know the Students' Union very well. To give you more of an idea of what to expect from the Students' Union at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS), we caught up with our SU Co-ordinator Rachael Jones for a chat about Union life at Shrewsbury.

What is a typical day at work for you?

“Full of friendly faces, laughter and chatter.”

What is your favourite part of your job?

“Getting to know the students at UCS; whether that’s through Union activity or just stopping and having a chat in the corridors. We are lucky enough to have some wonderful students in Shrewsbury which makes my job a lot easier and very enjoyable!”

What has been your proudest moment whilst working at the university?

“Seeing the positivity and tenacity of the UCS netball team during their first season in the BUCS league. It was a pretty intense experience, being highly competitive and playing against long-established teams, but I was so proud of the girl’s attitudes and their resilience.”

What can the Students' Union offer students?

“The SU is here for every student at UCS, whether you want to get stuck into lots of activities, or just help out when you can. Working alongside colleagues in Chester SU, we’re here to provide representation for students (should that be for academic reasons, or to provide feedback on your course), advice on financial matters, housing and academic procedures, the opportunity to join existing sports teams and societies (or set one up yourself – which is really easy), or to help us deliver a programme of events that brings everyone together.”

Have you seen anything funny or surprising while working at the university?

“I once saw Snow White and the Seven Dwarves walking past my office window… honestly. The actors starring in the Pantomime at Theatre Severn last year used to park their cars next to the Guildhall and walk past the SU common room on their way to work. It was quite a funny sight!”

Choose a movie title for the story of your life.

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – I really like the quote: ‘When you lose your laugh, you lose your footing.’”

If you could have a superpower what would you choose?

“Teleportation – I’d like to be able to teleport to different places at the drop of a hat.”

What makes University Centre Shrewsbury unique?

“The close-knit community and the distinctive involvement of academics and support staff in our students’ university experience. It really is like no other.”
