Shrewsbury Parkrun

University Centre Shrewsbury is proud to be working with a number of local organisations to launch #run4health, Shropshire – a new beginners Couch to 5k running programme which will start on September 10th.

UCS, Shrewsbury Colleges Group, Energize, Shropshire Council and Shropshire Mind, along with GP’s from several local practices are working together to promote the programme which will be coordinated by local running club, the Shropshire Shufflers.

David Clarke, Student Support Coordinator said: “This is a really exciting initiative to promote positive wellbeing across the whole community. The benefits of running are huge. Obviously it can make big improvements to your physical health but it’s important that we emphasise the powerful positive effect that exercise can have on mental health too. #run4health will run over World Mental Health Day on 10th October and that’s significant – it’ll be fantastic if UCS staff, students, friends, and family get outside and give it a go”.

The 10-week programme starts at 6.45pm on Tuesday 10th September, in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park. It will be led by the Shufflers running club and is open to absolutely anyone wanting to have a go at running. Everyone is welcome and no prior experience is required - just a decent pair of trainers and lots of enthusiasm!

Glenn Francke, Head Coach with the Shropshire Shufflers explained. “We regularly organise beginner running groups so that in itself is not a new concept. We can use that experience to help with any anxieties about running for the first time, or help with any concerns around re-engaging with physical activity.”

Each week there will be a chance to socialise and celebrate progress in a local café. After 10 weeks, on Saturday 16th November, the plan is to hold a celebration at Shrewsbury Parkrun when the group completes a 5k together.
