Could you tell us your age and where you are from?

I am 21 years old and come from a little village in the south of Norway.

Why did you decide to study at University Centre Shrewsbury?

I decided to study at UCS as it had everything I was looking for in my undergraduate degree. It has excellent academic tutoring and support allowing me to be successful as a student. Additionally, Shrewsbury is a safe place to live that still provides all the services you need. It is also a cool ancient English town to explore with good hiking areas surrounding it. Lastly, but not least, it has quite good weather compared to the rest of the UK, not that that is saying a lot.

Why did you choose to study your course?

I chose to study Biotechnology as I think it is a very futuristic and interesting field which provides you with a wide range of possibilities after completing the degree. In addition, biotechnology is quickly growing and a very interesting field to work in as it covers a broad spectrum of biological applications. I also like the idea of developing and producing new compounds that can be valuable for the world by combining the fields of technology and biology.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course is the knowledge and experience you gain in the field of bioscience. You have the basic modules such as genetics, microbiology, cell biology and molecular biology as well as more specific biotechnology modules such as bioengineering, gene interactions and pathology of disease. We also have a lot of practical laboratory lessons where we learn to perform relevant and modern bioscience techniques and applications that I particularly enjoy.

What are your plans and hopes for the future?

My plans for the future are to go on to do a Masters in biosciences, preferably in molecular medicine or industrial biotechnology. Then I hope to get a job where I can be a part of a company or organisation that is providing products or services to create a better world.

Have you seen anything funny or surprising in Shrewsbury?

I find the “Pug-man” quite entertaining. This guy has around 10 pugs and walks them all around town and past my house every day.

If you could have a superpower what would you choose?

I think I would have to go for the classic teleportation here. Then I could be exploring lost ruins in Asian or walking the Amazon rainforest when I am not at the library doing my assignments.

What is the best piece of advice that you could give to a student?

Don’t start your assignments the night before they are due. Just don’t.

What makes University Centre Shrewsbury unique?

That would definitely be the close relationships you develop with all the other students and staff. It is particularly good as every student is academically well looked after by their lecturers and I think your chances of doing well at UCS is higher than at many other universities if you are willing to work for it.
