Course:

As a student at Shrewsbury you are never a number and actively encouraged to make comment, which in a larger university setting may be more difficult to achieve. A smaller setting promotes active discussion because there is nowhere to hide!

University Centre Shrewsbury allowed student Simon Birch to explore his interest in Military History and achieved a Masters Degree in the process.

I graduated with a 2:1 in History in 2017, and then thought, ‘now what?’ As I spend some of my summers doing battlefield tours to the western front, an MA in Military History, particularly in a local university, had real promise. I have been studying military history since childhood, but I wanted to improve my skills in researching, writing and presenting the subject that has always had my interest. I have often had ideas on the conduct of military operations, but lacked the confidence to counter some recent academic thoughts. Completing the MA has improved my knowledge of how an academic argument is constructed, and in doing so improved my capability of constructing a counter argument.

The Tutors

I was lucky with my tutors, Jonathan and Darren. If you listen to what they are telling you the dividends will be significant. I honestly believe that both of them only wanted the very best for their students. As a student at Shrewsbury you are never a number and actively encouraged to make comment, which in a larger university setting may be more difficult to achieve. A smaller setting promotes active discussion because there is nowhere to hide! The University setting has given me the tools that allowed me to pass. I do firmly believe that the biggest advantage University Centre Shrewsbury has amongst its competition are its tutors – they really want the best for you and as long as you put the work in you will be successful.
