Course overview

At Shrewsbury, we believe that studying literature should engage the imagination as well as the intellect. The English course offers you the opportunity to study a wide range of texts from the Renaissance to the present, to learn about film adaptation, and to develop your own creative writing. Studying English at Shrewsbury will both equip you with the key skills and knowledge needed to succeed at degree level and enable you to extend your understanding of the boundaries of literature.

Why Study English with us?

At each level, the Shrewsbury course combines the best of traditional English literary studies with chances to explore newer areas. Core modules enable you to understand literature within the context of major historical and cultural developments and introduce you to the study of film and creative writing. As you progress, you will be offered increasing opportunities to specialize in your own areas of interest.

Our commitment to small class sizes allows us to get to know you as an individual and to respond to your needs and interests. All of our lecturers combine expertise with a friendly, approachable teaching style.

Guildhall is nestled on the banks of the River Severn, and only a short walk from the winding streets of Shrewsbury.
First constructed in 2004, and renovated for the arrival of University Centre Shrewsbury in 2015, the Guildhall building is used as the main centre for teaching and learning and offers fresh, modern and open spaces for students to enjoy.
The building boasts brand-new computer suites, lecture and seminar rooms, open-plan laboratories, a spacious library, as well as a student common room, lounge, fitness suite, courtyard, and on-site café.
